The Dal lake is the first place
that you should visit the moment you reach the state of Jammu
and Kashmir. You will be landing in Srinagar if you were to
fly into the state from any of the major cities in and around
the region. If you are arriving by train or by road, you should
still try to make this beautiful lake your base throughout
the trip.
The Dal lake is famous for not just its beauty
and splendor but also due to the fact that it is very close
to numerous tourist attractions in and around the city of
Srinagar. While no tourist attraction is actually situated
on the banks, there are numerous places of beauty and religious
importance situated close by.

The famous Shalimar gardens, which were painstaking
set up by Mughal emperors, still retain their regal splendor as
they receive water through a long canal connected to the Dal lake.
You can check out various attractions of this magnificent garden
as it is just a short distance away from the world famous lake.
If you are keen on spirituality, you can visit
the Hazratbal mosque which is renowned for the fact that it houses
a strand of hair that this said to be of Prophet Mohammed himself.
Even this mosque is situated on the banks of the Dal lake in Srinagar.
If you love winter sports but want to stay away
from the mountainous regions of Gulmarg or Kargil, you can opt for
some wonderful ice skating and winter related spots on the frozen
lake itself.
Not surprisingly, the Dal lake is considered the
cultural soul of the city and is the first stop of all holiday goers
irrespective of whether they live in the city or are visiting from
outside.
The lake is also a great place to relax after visiting
different places like the Vaishno Devi temple or the Amarnath trek.
You can also spend a few days in the house boats enjoying good food
and commune with nature after enjoying Kashmir’s attractions
to the fullest.
